Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of Christians, and Ali Sistani, a prominent Iraqi scholar, delivered the message of peaceful coexistence in their first historic meeting.
According to News hub, the Pope met Ali Sistani in Najaf on the second day of his visit to Iraq. Najaf is considered the center of Shiite scholars.
It should be noted that Pope Francis arrived in Iraq on Friday. He was received at the airport by
the Iraqi Prime Minister.
Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of Roman Catholic Christians delivered a speech in which he called for an end to extremism, corruption, and violence.
The head of the Catholic Church began his first visit to Iraq with a meeting with government
officials
in Baghdad. He then went to the church where extremists killed Christians in 2010.
Pope Francis' visit to Iraq comes at a time when the country is trying to stabilize after years of
sectarian strife, corruption, and widespread public outrage over the government's
failure to
provide basic services.
Pope Francis pays tribute to the 58 people killed in the 2010 terrorist attack on the R. Lady of Salvation Church. This attack was one of the deadliest attacks on Christians.
The pope also worshiped at Sheldon Cathedral of St. Joseph.
Pope Francis is visiting the war-torn country of Iraq despite an outbreak of the coronavirus and
security concerns to meet with the world's oldest and most discriminated Christian community.
