WhatsApp services resume after global shutdown| News Hub

Millions of users were unable to send or receive messages on WhatsApp.

The popular messaging app WhatsApp stopped working for many people around the world on
Tuesday, with users in Asia, South Africa, the UK, and Europe reporting problems sending and
receiving messages.

However, the platform resumed its services after the outage was resolved.

At around 0750 GMT, outage reporting site Downdetector showed that more than 68,000 users in the UK had reported problems with the app. It said 19,000 people in Singapore and 15,000 in South Africa reported problems.

WhatsApp has become an important means of communication for households and businesses. When WhatsApp had an after-hours outage last October, it hurt trading in assets from cryptocurrencies to oil, before traders moved to alternative platforms like Telegram.

The app's latest outage comes during the festive season in India its biggest market by user count when people use WhatsApp more than usual to send season greetings.

Downdetector tracks outages on its platform by the aggregating status report from multiple sources, including user-submitted errors. A large number of customers are affected by this outage.

A spokesperson for WhatsApp company Meta Platforms said on Tuesday, "We are aware that some people are currently experiencing problems sending messages and we are working to restore the app for everyone as soon as possible. "

In October last year, Meta saw its stock price fall by more than 5% after its services, including Instagram and WhatsApp, were down globally for hours. About 124,000 outages have been reported on Facebook, about 97,000 on Instagram, and more than 33,000 on WhatsApp, according to Down Detector's latest data.
